Kampot Governor Says Export of Bananas to Foreign Markets is Excellent

PHNOM PENH: Apart from durian, pepper and coconut, which are primary agricultural products exported from Kampot province, yellow bananas have also been identified as an excellent export product for foreign markets.

Speaking at the press conference on the achievements made by Kampot province over the past five years, held at the Office of the Council of Ministers on Thursday, 16 February 2023, the Director of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Kampot confirmed that the province has two companies that currently grow and export bananas to foreign markets: World Tristar Cambodia, owned by Tycoon So Nguon, and Longmate Company, owned by Tycoon Hun Lak.

The Provincial Department Director stated that each year these two companies export more than 200,000 tons of bananas. Currently, there are 1,063 hectares of banana plantations in Kampot province, of which 661 hectares make up the harvestable area. For each hectare, 43 tons of bananas are harvested.

Kampot Governor, Mao Thonin, reaffirmed the Provincial Agriculture Department Director’s statement and said that these two companies export more than 2,000 tons of bananas per month to foreign markets, which is further boosting cultivation and exports from the province.

The Governor added that the two companies growing and exporting bananas employ more than 2,000 people in Kampot province.

He described how the banana plantations in Kampot are irrigated by a waterfall, and combined with good weather and soil conditions, the cultivated bananas end up sweet and fragrant.
